About NAS

There are a lot of beautiful interesting archaeological objects in Ukraine. Most of them located in the colorful places on the sea and river banks, near the mountains and in endless steppes. Organization of the archaeological excavations has become a huge volunteer project long ago. For now this project works only thanks to enthusiasm of antiquity fancies.

“New Archaeological School” was founded in 2002 (our Birthday — June, 27). This NGO is one of the examples of high-qualitied and selfless volunteer work. Its founders is the ex-students of the Faculty of history of the Zaporizhzhya National University — Oleg Tuboltsev and Dmytro Kobalia. During the fifteen years of our archaeological activity, members of the school participated in the investigation of many Ukrainian sites. Years of NAS’s work embodied the creative synthesis of pedagogy and scientific activity. On the pedagogical field our purpose is the popularization of science as a way of life and thinking, demonstration of archaeology attractiveness for the young minds. At the same time we are oriented on real scientific results — reaching the new information about the history of Ukraine and people who lived here.

Everyone who wants to participate in archaeological research can join our work — hundreds of teenagers from Zaporyzhzhya, Kiev, Dnipro, Melitopol, Moskow, Berlin, St.-Petersburg etc. touched the archaeology with us. Members of NAS are active participants of Minor Academy of Sciences competition. We have published many articles and papers; collaborated with the researchers from Switzerland, Portugal, Moldova and Ukraine.
The latest monuments excavations we participated into are settlement of Kamyana Mohyla 1 near the Kamyana Mohyla site, Early Bronze Age complex Generalka 2, Paleolithic settlement of Myra, Late-Scythian Konsulivske hillfort in the Kherson region, the site of Perdigoes in Portugal and a lot of others.
Our project is an attempt to bring back the simplicity and attractiveness to our favorite hobby. During the field season, we study archaeology on many lections, excursions and provide games, competitions and tournaments. However, “New Archaeological School” camp is not just a teenager’s camp from the past millennium. We are the participants of the research, collaborating with anthropologists, geologists, and restorers. Our routine is organized to allow us to concentrate on our work during the long holidays.
During NAS existence kids and teenagers who visited our club and excavations worked to study artifacts of the past. They write scientific papers and take prizes on different competitions, present our results on the conferences, exchanging the scientific information with archaeologists in Ukraine and abroad. Since our foundation in 2002, several generations of teenager archaeologist worked here. However, our experienced members always join us when we need them. Their results are not forgotten, but form a basis for the researches of younger scholars.
Continuous course of lectures on history and archaeology is not only an basis for future studies in university, but also a collection of practical information about the methods of science in general and archaeology in particular. A lot of our methods and results are unique due to the multidisciplinary nature of our activity — by using personal knowledge and skills every one of us contributes to our collective work.
