Lords of the Snakes
It is time to become serious to our style, because this will be the first text about the art sensation at the Kamyana Mohyla — 1 settlement and the first news about the mobile Mesolithic art of Ukraine. It is hard to doubt trassological experiment; so our foreign colleagues didn’t. So, here is the news — short and official continuation of the story about what we did in Italy + thesis of our report:
Team of Institute of Archaeology of Ukraine, New Archaeological School and the “Kamyana Mohyla National reserve” found two unique objects during the excavation of ancient settlement. Ophidian sculptures made of local sandstone is dated approximately 7000 BC. This findings is unique for Ukraine Mesolithic Archaeology.
Sendstone fragments were found in 2016 in the cultural layer of ancient settlement, near the materials belong to the Mesolithic Kukrek culture. After detailed trassological research, microphotography and few experiments we discovered what is left of zig-zag ornamentation and other traces that characterizes the stones as the sculpture images of snake heads. The stones were modified by ancient flint tools.
The results achieved were shown and demonstrated at the IFRAO—2018 — international congress of Rock Art Science, helded August—September 2018 in Valcamonika, Northern Italy.
Report thesis is attached below. The settlement and the results of further researches waits for the continuation of our work. Analysis and interpretaion of them will be provided to study the archaeology and culture of prehistoric Ukraine. Many thanks to all the excavation participants, sponsors and curious people for their help.
